“ 　子供たちは、自分の見ることのできないずっと先の「未来」まで生きのび、それを見ることのできる自分の分身であり、存在の延長である。自分にどれほどのことができるか知らないが、とにかく今、何の屈託もなく、とんだりはねたりしている子供らが青年になり、おとなになり、さらに自分たちの子供を持つころに、木々はやはり今のように緑のままに、空は青いままに、世の中は荒廃していないように、何とか少しでも手をうっておいてやろう、という気が起ってくる。あまりに人に言えない、年寄りじみた考え方かも知らないが、子供を見ることによって、自分の死後に茫漠と広がっている「未来」というものと、はじめてわずかながら、自分との生きたつながりを持ちはじめる。――子供たちは、いわば「未来」と自分との間に、肌のぬくみを伝えてくれる、生きたメディアであろう。
